JUNIOR FIELD ENGINEER

Name: Marcos Bordadagua / Employer: Capital Paving / Education: Civil Engineering Technologies - Environmental / Compensation: $30,000 - $40,000 per year

I always enjoyed being outside as a kid, growing up and working with my hands along with getting dirty became my passion. From working on a farm came the interest in heavy equipment and taking charge of small projects from beginning to end, this interest turned into a career choice. I have obtained a great amount of experience in a short time as a Jr. Supervisor, you have to learn fast and make quick decisions, one bad choice can cost a lot of money and time.

Earning a degree in Civil Engineering Technologies - Environment gave me the knowledge to be able to make correct choices out in the field. Every day is different, with different problems to solve, and projects. Capital Paving has been in the road building business for over 25 years, and recently won the MTO Paver of the Year for a record of 3 times, along with outstanding environmental achievements.

Making the decision to become a Jr. Supervisor has given Marcos a great amount of experience in all aspects of his career, "although I am still paying my dues I will gain so much experience and grow in my field".

PROJECT MANAGER

Name: Marcos Bordadagua / Employer: Capital Paving / Education: Civil Engineering Technologies - Environmental / Compensation: $30,000 - $40,000 per year

I joined Aecon Utility Engineering in 2007 after completing my undergraduate degree in Materials Engineering at McMaster University. Growing up I unknowingly explored many aspects of engineering in my spare time. I loved spending countless hours inventing and building projects with my Dad in the garage, but I never really considered engineering until my last year of high school and even then, I don’t think I knew what I was getting into. I am glad I took that path which has led me to work for Aecon. There is a great sense of accomplishment and pride working in the construction industry and seeing a project each step of the way, from design to reality.

Being the project manager for a design build project to implement fiber optic networks throughout the city of Toronto has me undertaking many responsibilities including coordinating between design and construction, tracking and documenting project progress and time and budget management.

Katelyn's favourite aspect of her job is the balance between office and field work. The combination of both work environments creates a stimulating and exciting work experience.

MACHINE OPERATOR

Name: Marcos Bordadagua / Employer: Capital Paving / Education: Civil Engineering Technologies - Environmental / Compensation: $30,000 - $40,000 per year

In early 2002 I felt that I needed a career change, something new and exciting. My brother was working as a heavy equipment operator and regularly stated how much he enjoyed it. I knew I had to try it.

I began my career at a small company that offered me the opportunity to learn the trade. I was also fortunate enough to have participated in the first Machine Operators program at Conestoga College, which my currant employer, Steed and Evans, as well as several other construction companies offered this opportunity to several of their employees. The program helped improve my skills as well as my confidence. Everyday is a new experience, and with every new experience comes an overwhelming sensations of accomplishment. Transforming a pile of dirt into a welcoming landscape, or reconstructing a road that later I and many others drive on is an awesome feeling.

There are several different pieces of equipment that I am fortunate enough to work with, from front end loaders to packers, our big Cat 325 excavator or the occasional mini excavator and my personal favourite the bull dozer. Everyday brings new challenges and greater rewards. As a Machine Operator my job is dangerous but very fulfilling.

There is a camaraderie between operators as well as within the crew, and a great sense of pride both in a job well done and safely done too!
